Headlining Canon's announcement of a new EOS Cinema System is the C300 interchangeable lens camera, available with an EF mount or industry-standard PL mount. A new line of lenses are designed to deliver high quality video with the new system.
The new C300 and C300 PL use an 8.29 megapixel 35mm CMOS sensor. The sensor will read 1920 x 1080 HD for each of the RGB color channels and uses MPEG-2 Full HD compression. Fast sensor read-out speed should help combat rolling shutter, a problem inherent to CMOS sensors. Audio will be saved in the open-source MXF format, and the C300 will record to dual CF memory cards. A built-in cooling system is incorporated in the camera design, as are dust-proof weather sealings. Shooters can select framerates between 1 and 60 fps in 1 fps increments for an unprecedented level of control in an interchangeable lens video camera.
Seven new lenses also debut today, designed specifically for HD and 4K video capture. The CN-E14.5-60mm T2.6 L S and CN-E30-300mm T2.95-3.7 L S zoom lenses will be availabe in EF and PL mounts; three prime lenses announced today will be EF only. Each lens uses an 11-blade aperture diaghram.
Still under development is the 4K camera we were promised at Canon Expo 2010. It will offer a full frame 35mm CMOS sensor and support recording of 4K video (4096 x 2160 resolution) at 24P with Motion-JPEG compression. Virtually no other details are released at this time about the upcoming EOS Cinema camera.
Canon takes one giant leap into the world of professional video recording with the EOS C300. Pricing and Availability
The Canon EOS C300 with EF mount will arrive in January 2012 and the EOS C300 PL will follow in March 2012. Both cameras are estimated with a $20,000 price tag.
New zoom lens CN-E 14.5-60mm T2.6 L S in EF and PL mounts will cost an estimated $45,000 and will be available late January 2012. Arriving a few months later in March 2012, the CN-E 30-300mm T2.95-3.7 L S in EF and PL mounts will cost around $47,000. The Canon CN-E24mm T1.5 L F and CN-E50mm T1.3 L F, both EF mount lenses, will arrive in July 2012 with list prices of $6800 each. Look for the CN-E85mm T1.3 L F in August 2012, also with an MSRP of $6800.
